I snort. Can’t help it. I already had no intention of doing whatever it was he asked of me, but that? I can’t even pretend to think it over, instead tossing back, “Yeah right, Rumplestiltskin.”

The little creature makes a face, as if it doesn’t understand the reference. “That’s not my name.”

“Obviously. Doesn’t matter. Even if it was possible, I’d never give up a child.” When he just stares at me, I say, “Because that’s what you meant, right? Firstborn child.”

“Aye, the one in your belly right now.”

Though I’m hesitant and wary and don’t really think it’s the best idea to take my eyes off of him, I drop my gaze to the faintest curve at the bottom of my belly. I have Lolly to thank for that.

“Not a baby,” I correct. “Just one too many of Lolly’s apple fritters.”

He doesn’t have eyebrows on his leathery face but, if he did, he’d be raising them. “You must know you’re with child.”

“But I’m not.”

“Humans lie. Zrazz doesn’t.”

There goes the hope that he’s different than the fae… unless he’s lying right now. Because, if he isn’t lying, then I have to admit that I’m… I’m—

Oh, boy.

It can’t be possible—can it?

The simple answer is: maybe? I’m a twenty-six year old chick who’s been sexually active since my late teens. When I was still with Jim, I used birth control; I wasn’t ready to be a mom, just like Jim wasn’t really ready to get married. It worked for us, though now I can’t help but wonder if that was fate’s little nudge that I was meant for Rys and Jim… hey, he seemed happy with Morgan the last time I saw him.

Of course, I never expected to end up in Faerie at all. So did I have my pills on me when I crossed over? Nope. Did I worry about what might happen when I initially seduced Rys? Not even a little.

Has he come inside of me? More times than I can count.

Now, the morning after—when we were still in Siúcra together—I had a couple of concerns. Most of them were overshadowed by the way the prison guards immediately picked up on how we slept together, and I guess I just convinced myself that a human female and a fae male couldn’t conceive.

Of course, I didn’t know anything about mates or ffrindaus or halflings back then. Months later, I met Riley at Oberon’s palace and eventually learned that she’s half-human, half-fae. It’s pretty rare—she confessed that she’s the first female halfling born in at least three hundred years—but it is possible.

I just… I guess I never thought it would happen to me.

And it hasn’t. I would know, wouldn’t I? A skipped period, tender boobs, some morning sickness, anything?

Except that sometimes you don’t know. And sometimes it takes a sneaky little faerie creature looking at your belly like it’s the gold at the end of the rainbow before you can’t stop thinking… maybe?

While my head is spinning, all thoughts of what-if and maybe’s dashing around in there, Zrazz tiptoes toward the edge of the water.
